Womens Health
Hormonal Health MUST include a serious look at the diet!
PMS, infertility, menopausal symptoms, thyroid, auto-immunity, weight gain around the middle, depression, mood swings, foggy/confused thinking and many more are indications of a problem, screaming for remedy!  Estrogen in any form is not the answer! Men often struggle with a form of these issues too!
The balance of all hormones, not just estrogen and progesterone, is an absolutely huge part of our health, for both women and men.  We must always start that process by focusing on an intentionally balanced diet with the right WHOLE FOOD fruit and vegetables & Omega 3 Essential (body must eat them, because it can't make them) Fatty Acids from flax seeds/flax seed oil. supplements from The Plan: http://www.nutritionmadesimple.net/thePlan.shtml.  It is not rational to think that hormones, made from the nutrients we get from our foods, could be balanced without the diet being well composed.  I have spent pages on this web site talking with you about how important nutrition is, including all of the nutrients in fruits, vegetables, some nuts (those with high amounts of Omega-3 fats), seeds, especially pumpkin and flax seeds, vegetable proteins, especially soybeans and their bountiful, healthful isoflavones and other phytonutrients.  Consuming the flax and for some of you, fish oil too, is essential for you health, including your hormones. Also, do not eat hydrogenated fats in any form. This means all margarine, all shortenings, and the zillion foods in our life that contain them, must be avoided, and new choices made. Hydrogenated fats (also called trans fats) are in most of the foods we commonly eat, so read the label. So in your search about balancing your estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and the other steroidal hormones, never lose sight of the importance of your food choice in your hormonal health. Eat your 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, raw! Take the Juice Plus+ product I have recommended on every page in this dialogue, Take your flax seeds (freshly ground, BY YOU, never purchased already ground!) plus the Barlean's lignan rich flax seed oil. Eat your soy beans and high quality, but organic soy isolate, tofu, edamame, miso, etc. as a part of your protein intake, and avoid meats which have been fed estrogens and growth factors.

Exercise is an important part of hormonal balances, but is somewhat beyond the scope of this web site. Please do exercise, aerobically and in weight bearing activities to support all aspects of health.

Beyond, but not instead of, Nutrition

In addition to Whole Food Nutrition, it does appear obvious, that many, if not most of us desperately NEED  monthly supplementation of progesterone. Personally, I am convinced that using a very high quality cream with the transdermal application, like the two brands I recommend, is best. Like every choice I make for my clients and customers, I feel that the brand does absolutely matter.  Many of these creams available on the market contain xenoestrogenic compounds (see list below) in them, that can exacerbate part of the problem.  So the two brands I recommend are the 1) FemCreme® from Pure Essence Labs and 2) Two from Arbonne Brand called Phytoprolief® and Prolief® Balancing Creams.
Women, other than those who are pregnant or breast feeding will use the FemCreme® or Phytoprolief® to be able to benefit from the phytoestrogenic herbs that support their imbalances.
Men, pregnant women, and lactating mothers will us the Prolief®, to avoid the phytoestrogenic herbs that they don't need.

It is important to find a health care professional to help you with taking and evaluating the occasional saliva tests needed to stay balanced over time.  Do not rely on anyone who ever suggests estrogen for your body, unless that person cares enough about you to test your saliva for the BALANCE of Estrogen to Progesterone. It is not possible to test the balance correctly with blood tests.  Estrogen causes cancer, and out of balance with progesterone, causes serious health issues.  Even the kindest, longest term, and wonderful doctors have ignored this concept.  Your life depends on taking care to do this right, even if it seems complicated.  Read the writings of John Lee, M.D. and Christiane Northrup, M.D., carefully and completely.
List of xenoestrogens also called xenobiotics [1]: Organochlorines, chlorine gas, pesticides, nearly all plastics, PCBs, dioxins, all petrochemical derived pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, alcohols, solvents such as those found in nail polish, paint remover, glues, emulsifiers and waxes found in soaps and cosmetics, dry-cleaning chemicals, phthalates, synthetic compounds that add flexibility to plastics, meats from livestock animals fed estrogenic drugs to fatten them up, waste from sewage treatment plants that contains nonylphenols, estrogenic breakdown products of detergents, synthetic estrogens and progestins (not natural progesterone) found in the urine of millions of women taking birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy that is flushed down the toilet and eventually works its way into the food chain.
So, here is the story, simplified and verified&.

Do you or anyone close to you have any of the subtle or overt symptoms of estrogen dominance listed above? That means, do you have too much estrogen and estrogenic toxins in your body in relation to the amount of progesterone? Yes, progesterone production does decline with age, but if the estrogens, from natural and xenoestrogenic sources are running amuck, regardless of your age, or the presence or absence of a uterus/ovaries, then the balancing, cancer preventing, bone density promoting qualities of progesterone must be added to the body to protect your health.  This is an important point that many practitioners are forgetting.  We naturally make progesterone in greater amounts in our child bearing years.  But stress, a deficiency of key nutrients, and/or deficiencies in the essential fats, render us unable to make even a basic amount of progesterone.  However, the body makes estrogen easily and from several sources.

So most women and many men are actually relatively deficient in the progesterone hormone.  Yes, men make estrogen too, and need to educate themselves about this as well.  These are some of the symptoms that may diminish or disappear with the transdermal application (i.e. applied to the skin to be absorbed into the body) of natural progesterone cream from diosgenin from either soybeans or wild yams could and often do help.  Natural Progesterone, which is NOT the same as the artificially created Progestins found in prescription birth control pills and hormone replacement therapies, will very effectively and harmoniously rebalance your body, bringing nature's hormonal balance back into line.

I have two brands of natural progesterone cream that I like and use.  One of them, FemCreme® by Pure Essence Laboratories, Inc. is available for purchase from this web site.  The FemCreme does contain phytoestrogenic herbs that help with menopausal and cyclical problems, so is not recommended for pregnant women or men.  I have found the Arbonne Brand Phytoprolief® (for non-pregnant women) and the Prolief®, for pregnant women and all men) to work very well too.  Many of you will chose other brands for yourself. So, I feel absolutely compelled to ask you to choose wisely, selecting xenoestrogen-free pure creams which are delivered in a pump format, rather than in a tub or a tube.  This serves to prevent the rancidification of the fat that is the basis of all steroidal hormones, as air contaminates them. These fats become rancid when exposed to air, heat, or light.

Many women are advised by their doctors to take artificial hormones in the form of birth control pills and other Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). These prescriptions have been made for many years but are not the best choice for the health of the many women taking them.  The reasons for these misconceptions are many, and really confusing.  There are a great many untruths that are still being taken as fact by many people in and out of the medical community.  They are harmful and filled with half-truths and some outright falsehoods.  But the stakes are very high for all of us, so I encourage you to read and order tapes/videos from Dr. Lee's web site at www.johnleemd.com.  Learn for yourself if you want to keep your breasts, uterus, ovaries, prostate, gallbladder, hair on you head, trim waistline, thyroid functioning, bone density, and strong functioning immune system.

The Big Fat Untrue Myths:

1. As a woman ages, her body loses its ability to make enough estrogen.  This is untrue.

2. After a hysterectomy, a woman completely loses her ability to make estrogen.  Progesterone becomes unimportant.  Both are untrue.

3. The only purposes of progesterone are to preserve and protect an embryo in the endometrial lining, supporting pregnancy, and to oppose estrogen in preventing uterine cancer.  Other than that, low or non-existent progesterone levels are not a problem.  This is untrue.

4. All hormones, whether created in a pharmaceutical laboratory, or by a living animal or by a human are equally effective.  Bio-identical hormones are not necessary, as the synthetic ones work just as well.  This is untrue.

5. Blood tests accurately test for the presence or deficiency of steroidal hormones.  This is untrue. (Note the recommendations below by Christiane Northrup, M.D.)[2] [1]

6. Only women need to be looking at the balance of estrogen to progesterone for their health.  Men's bodies are not in need of Progesterone supplementation to offset the many environmental "Estrogens," called Xenoestrogens, in their lives.  This is untrue.

7. Estrogen is the hormonal key for bone density health.  This is untrue.

8. All menopausal women need estrogen.  Natural estrogen is ok; it's the prescription estrogens that are the only bad ones.  This is untrue.

There is an abundance of valid, scientific evidence that artificial hormones like progestins are profoundly inferior in function and health promotion to the human body's own Progesterone.  Progestins do not equal progesterone, and should not be interchangeably used nor assumed equally safe! The new research and the halting of current research in the press of late, points to this obvious truth.

The truth has many facets, including diet and exercise and much newly confirmed information from research trials halted due to high incidences of serious illness and death in the study participants! Unfortunately the billions of dollars of financial interest by the drug companies and the old teachings from the medical schools are impeding progress in changing the patterns. Most physicians out there are still behind on the facts. And the mediocrity inherent in the concept of Medical Malpractice, absolutely does not support responsive changes in the doctor's practice patterns. The measure of Malpractice is measured by moving outside of the practice norms of other doctors. So everyone is just sitting is the past, afraid to move forward. The fear of the Hippocratic Oath's calling of:

"ABOVE ALL DO NO HARM"

is outweighed by the fear of a medical malpractice judgment! So breaking out of the obsolete theories of the past is hindered by the financial losses of the future. In the meantime, we are getting sick and for sure...

...Harm is being done!

What is true?

1. Salivary testing for steroidal hormones is necessary to accurately measure them. Most of us, women and men, of all ages, are making sufficient estrogen for our bodies. Some are not, but most are. We should never assume a deficiency of estrogen, because the most likely reality is a deficiency of Progesterone instead.

2. The vast majority of women continue to make plenty of estrogen after a natural menopause or a hysterectomy; it is progesterone that is deficient! We make estrogen in our body fat. Both estrogen and progesterone can be made in the adrenal cortex. However, since stress limits the production of both progesterone and estrogen in the adrenal glands, many of us fail to make the needed progesterone to balance our biological need for progesterone. However we do make estrogen from high glycemic food intake and in our body fat, so we are often not deficient in our natural estrogen synthesis. Therefore, a heavier woman will make more estrogen, than a thin woman. They also have a higher tendency toward a dramatic progesterone deficiency. The ability to make estrogen only diminishes, but does not stop in menopause/post-menopause, regardless of the reason for the menopausal onset.

3. When supplemental hormones are indicated, by saliva testing, human hormones must be replaced with bio-identical hormones, and the balance of Progesterone and estrogen must be observed and honored. Hormonal replacement should be the same BIO-IDENTICAL hormone that their body makes.  The term Progesterone refers to the natural, bio-identical progesterone hormone like that which the human body makes.  Progestins are patented chemically altered variants of the real thing. Hormones that are not identical will not function in all the ways that the natural hormones do, and are damaging to our health.

4. Progesterone is the "forgotten hormone" made in the ovaries for the 14 days after ovulation at about 20 mg. per day for most women, it is tremendously important to our health, including weight balancing, blood-sugar balancing, bone density, circulatory/heart health, muscle tone, skin and hair health, emotional and mental health, fat metabolism (gall-bladder health), thyroid functioning, and other health concerns.  It also supports the endometrial lining and therefore maintains pregnancy and opposes estrogen to prevent all cancers which form in the presence of estrogen receptor cells&uterus, ovaries, breast, prostate, and the colon.

5. Environmental or Xenoestrogens are real and they do negatively affect us!  Many, if not 80-90%, of us, men included, are biologically filled with estrogens and false damaging estrogenic chemicals.  Women make estrogen in abundance, long after they lose their monthly production of progesterone, long after the hysterectomy or natural menopause.  We also ingest or consume them in many only somewhat controllable ways.  They are in various forms, in absolutely devastating forms, called Xenoestrogens, listed above.  I encourage you to read about Xenoestrogens in "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer" Chapter 18, pp 291-314 or in "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" ch. 5, pp 50-60 by John R. Lee, MD.  Also go to his web site at www.johnleemd.comThis is a well researched issue that requires some action on our part, including the reduction of the Xenoestrogens, listed above, intake and the support of the estrogen/progesterone balance by supplementing with additional progesterone.

6. Because the very high probability that the reader has enough estrogen and not enough progesterone to balance, and because of the profound health risks associated with an overabundance of estrogen and deficiency of its opposing hormone, progesterone, I urge you to avoid taking any form, including natural compounded estrogens, until you have been accurately tested for a deficiency of estrogen using salivary testing. To read more about saliva versus serum tests, read the references to this text. The hormones we are testing for are hydrophobic, fat based chemical compounds that very quickly move from the blood plasma to be bound by the proteins in the blood cells, and are no longer usable to the body as hormones  We don't fully understand the impact of the Xenoestrogens, but we do know that they are harmful and long-lived in some forms, like DDT and other endocrine disrupter forms. Their damage goes on for many years.

7. Trans-dermal absorption (i.e. through the skin) is more effective and less stressful to the liver, than oral hormones. Though, it is really important to use pure, creams made without the xenoestrogenic chemicals sometimes put into creams, as you liver will not be filtering the Xenoestrogens for you, as it would from oral progesterone intake.

8. Hormones are fat-based substances and will become rancid in an open air tub or tube or if exposed to light, air, and heat.  Dose-metered pumps are longer lasting and retain the quality of the cream better

9. Estrogen can help with bone cell retention by sustaining the osteoclasts, but can not stimulate new bone cells to grow.  Progesterone does that, by stimulating the osteoblasts.  So their balance is crucial for solid, healthy bones.

10. Estrogen is a growth factor and progesterone is the balancing or braking factor to estrogen's cell proliferation effect. It is also calming, soothing, and restful. This is a very important point and well covered in Dr. Lee's books.

11. The other corticosteroid hormones, including glucocorticoids like cortisol as well as the mineral corticoids are affected by the balance of estrogen and progesterone in men's and women's bodies.  The endocrine system is highly interrelated.

12. Men are also very much at risk for estrogen dominance! (Read John Lee, MDs newest book about men and prostate cancer.)So do you need to use a natural progesterone cream on your body with regularity?  There is a very good chance that you do. There is a 100% chance though, that you are well advised to research it for yourself, intensely.  Read Dr. Lee's latest book: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer and read from his web site at www.johnleemd.com.  Also read some of the other literature from other physicians like Christiane Northrup, M.D. See the Chart below to see how the Nutrition Made Simple program supports the improvement in hormonal balances and health.
